October, recognized as Breast Cancer Awareness Month worldwide, also became a reality for the Lions Club of Tropical Gardens many years ago when one of its members, Merilda Miller had a dear friend and colleague who was diagnosed with the disease.

The Club set out to make support and early detection information more available to women living in the Cayman Islands, hence the first Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October 1997.

Since that time the Club has supported the month long event through community outreach, the issuing of free mammogram vouchers, fundraisers and educational materials.

Check the timeline here, and our website, for the latest calendar of events.

The black (actually, pink) tie event starts at 6pm with a champagne reception followed by a three course meal.

Guest speaker for 2019 is the Duchess of York, Sarah Ferguson.

The BCF Gala Dinner is the main annual fund-raising event for the Breast Cancer Foundation. These funds are vital to enable us to continue to offer physical, financial and emotional support to not only the breast cancer patient, but their immediate family members as required. This can be so vital for husbands, wives, partners, children – who can be left floundering by the news of a diagnosis of breast cancer.

The Gala Dinner is a fabulous event, a night filled with glamour, fun, auctions – live and silent – and great entertainment. Tables available seat 10 or 12. Tickets are CI$350 which covers a three-course meal and wine along with welcome bubbly. Sponsorships are available starting from CI$1,500 and rising to CI$12,500.

Our work is so valuable and essential and so many are dependent on us. No-one knows how they would cope with such a diagnosis of breast cancer, but they should know that we will be there for them in any way possible. We simply cannot do this work without help from YOU!

World Mental Health Day is observed on 10 October every year, with the overall objective of raising awareness of mental health issues around the world and mobilizing efforts in support of mental health.

The Day provides an opportunity for all stakeholders working on mental health issues to talk about their work, and what more needs to be done to make mental health care a reality for people worldwide.

The 2019 World Mental Health Day focus is on Suicide Prevention

Every 40 seconds, someone loses their life to suicide. Join us, on 10 October, in “40 seconds of action” to raise awareness of the scale of suicide around the world and the role that each of us can play to help prevent it.
