September is World Alzheimer’s Month and 21st September is World Alzheimer's Day. These are international campaigns to raise awareness and challenge dementia stigma.
World Alzheimer's Month is an initiative of Alzheimer's Disease International (ADI). Find out more at www.worldalzmonth.org.
The impact of World Alzheimer's Month is growing, but the stigmatisation and misinformation that surrounds dementia remains a global problem, that requires global action.
September 2017 will mark the 6th global World Alzheimer's Month, and will utilise the theme of 'Remember me' to highlight the importance of early detection and diagnosis of dementia.
These races are a fantastic opportunity for runners of ALL ABILITIES to improve their personal best 5km time. Due to handicapped times most runners finish around the same time so you will be sprint finishing against people you never usually would..
All three races will begin and end on Safehaven Drive between West Bay Road and Esterley Tibbets Highway. The 5km route will have a staggered start based on runners pre-allocated start time. Handicaps will be based on times from previous year's races, times in other island races this year or performance in club runs. Handicap times will be readjusted after each race in the series. Points will be allocated based on runners finishing position in each race, least aggregate points from any two races wins the series.
There will be awards for the top 3 runners across the series, the overall winner also receiving the coveted Jim Kelly Trophy to keep for the year. There will also be awards for the fastest male and female runners across the series. Awards will be presented at the WNRC Race Series dinner social (date TBC).
This event is open to all runners interested in participating. Runners not known to the club are asked to provide projected 5km race times prior to the race to allocate handicaps. To be in contention for the overall series, runners must have run with WNRC prior to the race series and make themselves known to a committee member. Runners who have not run with WNRC before are welcome to participate in the series but will only be able to win the fastest male and fastest female trophies awarded for the fastest time over the three races..
Wednesday Night Running Club meets every Wednesday at 6pm outside World Gym (except for the 3 Wednesdays of the race series). The club is open to all levels of runners and is completely free. Come along any Wednesday and ask for Tony, Carole, Nicola or Sam. For more information on WNRC add us on Facebook or email wednesdaynightrunningclu
DISCLAIMER - The roads will not be closed during the races and the route will not be marshalled. Runners are responsible for their own safety during the run and need to be aware of traffic. Wearing light coloured clothing, reflective strips and lights is advised.
World Heart Day takes place on 29 September every year and is a chance for people across the globe to take part in the world's biggest intervention against cardiovascular disease (CVD).
Created by the World Heart Federation, World Heart Day informs people around the globe that CVD, including heart disease and stroke, is the world’s leading cause of death claiming 17.5 million lives each year, and highlights the actions that individuals can take to prevent and control CVD. It aims to drive action to educate people that by controlling risk factors such as tobacco use, unhealthy diet and physical inactivity, at least 80% of premature deaths from heart disease and stroke could be avoided.
World Heart Day encourages us all to reduce our cardiovascular risk, and promotes a heart-healthy planet for those around us.
