Try This Tri 2010The 2010 Try-This-Tri, sponsored by Solomon Harris - Cayman Islands Attorneys-at-Law took place on Monday June 14th. Ray Welds was first across the finish line in the adult Sprint distance with a time of 1:02:19. Alyssa Dodson was first lady home with a time of 1:15:13.

Solomon Harris - Cayman Islands Attorneys-at-LawThe event, in its second year, was a resounding success and saw numbers increase from last year to 129 registrants spread amongst individual and team efforts.

The day had something for everyone. The adult Sprint triathlon had people up early with a 6:30am start in the beautiful Camana Bay pool. At 8:00am the Super Sprint triathlon had a mixed field - from ages under 11 to adults. The signature Kids Tri, with 78 registrants, began on time at 9:30am as cooling showers fortunately passed. The grand finale was the Tykes Dash, in which kids 4 and younger ran across the soccer pitch to great encouragement and smiles.

Sophia Harris, managing partner of Solomon Harris and Laura Hatfield, a partner who also competed in the adult sprint, presented the medals to finishers of the Super Sprint and Kids Tri. Mrs. Harris commented,

"I was very impressed with the professionalism of the athletes, especially the juniors in the Super Sprint and the Kids Tri. This is definitely a wholesome family event and Solomon Harris is happy to support the Cayman Islands Triathlon Association in activities that promote family fitness in Cayman."

After their accomplishments, athletes enjoyed refreshments from donors Flowers Bottled Water, Fosters, Kirks, Hurley's, and Treats. The day closed with donated random prizes for the kids and volunteers from Animal House, Articulate, Atlantic Kids, Books & Books, Burger King, Café del Sol, Captain Marvin's, Cayman Story Books, Dairy Queen, Dolphin Discovery, Haagen Daaz, Happy Fish Divers, Little Darlings, Nautilus, Quiznos, Red Sail Sports, and the Turtle Farm.

Co-Race Directors Dawn Kirton and Brent Buckner gave special thanks to Solomon Harris, Camana Bay, the generous donors, and the wonderful crew of volunteers. The free event gratefully accepted donations from adults in support of Meals on Wheels and the Cayman Islands Humane Society.

Thanks to Melissa Schreiner and Solomon Harris for the photos!

Anyone with a swim suit, a bike and a pair of running shoes was welcome to take part. It was FREE for the kids and adults were asked to make donations to support Solomon Harris’ charities (Meals on Wheels and the Cayman Islands Humane Society)

This family-friendly triathlon is unique in Cayman. It includes a pool swim in the beautiful Camana Bay Pool – a great start for those of you who may be shy about open water. After pool laps, athletes exit to the transition area in the parking lot, and then crank the bike leg and finish with the run course. Adult bikers in the Sprint event proceed from Camana Bay property, doing loops northward on the by-pass and back on West Bay Road, followed by a run through Camana Bay and the Paseo and its lovely shops. Kids, 17 and under, race entirely on Camana Bay property, thus contributing to a safe and scenic race for all. Teams are welcome.
