 Earth Week activities culminated in a spirited presentation on Sunday, 26 April, as over 200 enthusiastic participants gathered at Dart Park to undertake the annual 5k run/walk. Sponsored by PricewaterhouseCoopers and organized jointly by the National Trust of the Cayman Islands and the Phoenix Athletic Club, the event has developed into a highlight among the environmentally-related offerings.
Visitors and residents, individuals and members of corporate teams, pram pushers and passengers, and a number of four-footed friends all joined the throng to tour the loop course at various rates of speed.
Standout competitor Marius Acker took the rest of the field by storm in his usual pedal-to-the-metal style, leading all finishers in a time of 16:55.Runnerup was James Ogden, with an 18:20 clocking, and Chris Sharpe captured third-place honours in 19:36. Jasper Mikkelsen proved to be a champion-class pram pusher, as he turned in a sparkling performance, crossing the line in 19:56 as the fourth overall finisher.
Avril O’Reilly gained the victory ahead of all other lady entrants, marking up an eleventh-place overall time of 20:44. Laura Knox was only two slots back at 21:56 to claim the runner-up award, and April Shunn-Williams closed out prize-winning results a further two places back at 22:15.
The fastest three male and female competitors each received three-dimensional replicas of this year’s event shirt design by Rachelle Rivers. The awards were created by the Glassblowing Studio. Top corporate team honours went to PricewaterhouseCoopers team four, which was comprised of members Jesse Verster, Chania Donald, Pawel Stempowski, Jonathon Hawker, and Marli Ellis. Runnerup squad was Health Services Authority, with the AON BOYS garnering third place points.
Charles Bolland of PricewaterhouseCoopers and Frank Balderamos of the National Trust distributed a large number of random prizes to fortunate and grateful recipients. Foremost among these was Nancy Lacasse, lucky winner of a trip to Little Cayman.
