Organized by the Hash House Harriers running club, the Cross Island Relay, has become one of Cayman’s most popular annual sporting events and is one of the largest participation sporting occasions on the island. Drawing record numbers with 52 relay teams and over three hundred runners in 2009, its success is only expected to grow in 2010. Participants of all abilities and from all walks of life converge to hit the streets together for the event - local athletes, social runners, school children and pram pushers alike.
The event was originally founded by public high school PE teacher Winston Skinner in 1975. Since the discontinuation of the race by John Gray High School the Hash has taken over the tradition of organizing the relay.
The event consists of six member relay teams with the first leg beginning in Gun Bay and the last leg finishing at the Truman Bodden Sports Complex. The race begins at 6am sharp on the Sunday 7th. Registration and race packet pick-up are scheduled for the day before from noon until 4pm on Saturday, January6th at Camana Bay.
“Fidelity supports and promotes a healthy lifestyle and a health conscious community and thus once again we are proud to partner with the Hash House Harriers for the Cross Island Relay,” notes Tom Gammage, VP and Regional Marketing Manager, Fidelity Cayman Limited. “Any excess funds collected by Hash are donated to charity and so we look forward to seeing serious – and not so serious – runners sign up for this worthy cause!”
The Hash House Harriers is a global non-competitive running and social club which originated in Kuala Lumpur in 1938. The club currently has 1,879 hash groups registered in the world directory, with locations in 1,223 cities in 183 countries.
Fidelity is an active participant in the community it serves and the spirit of philanthropy is embedded in the company’s corporate culture.
