Pirates Week 10k to Hell and back!

TORRID TORRES ACES 10K - Eduardo Torres has shown on several occasions that not only is he capable of high-class performances within the confines of a tennis court, but set him loose on the open roads, and his endurance mode kicks in for quality distance running results.

Most recently, at the PIRATES WEEK OUT TO HELL AND BACK 10K, once front runner David Walker had to drop out due to injury about halfway along the course, it was clear sailing for Torres. His time of 37:29 brought him in over two minutes ahead of runner-up James Ogden,who clocked 39:52, as Ray Welds nipped Dean Gaffigan for third place,40:05.15 to 40:05.82.

Beth Schreader continued her dominance of the ladies' local running scene with an eighth-place overall finish,in a time of 41.29. Julie-Anne Pearson turned in a good effort to gain the second spot among the ladies ,timed at 43:40.Lauretta Bennett claimed third place in the category in 44:10.

Age group winners included:

(15-19) Victoria Crawshaw;
(20-29) Anna-Lisa Hawkes/Fabio Sordinelli;
(30-39) Laura Knox/Saud Gomez;
(40-49) Angela Skeete/Dean Gaffigan;
(50-59) Barb Wilson/Martin Tedd
(60 plus) Roger Davies

The 135-strong field, which included walkers and pram pushers, was quick to obey the starter's instructions-"Go to Hell!",only to find upon reaching that devilish destination, that they were confronted by a pitchfork-wielding apparition commanding them to"Get the Hell out of here!"

After completing the 6.2-mile course,finishers were treated to breakfast on the beach,provided by Calico Jack's, followed by the presentation of awards and the distribution of a large number of random prizes, many of which were theme-related.

As always, a number of visiting participants were welcomed, hailing from such points of origin as Bermuda, Ontario, British Columbia, Colorado, Illinois, Ohio, New York, and Georgia.

The organizers-PHOENIX ATHLETIC CLUB-thanked sponsors KRYS & ASSOCIATES and LeBleu for their contributions, and also the donors of prizes, and the volunteers at the event.

In 2008, more than one hundred runners, walkers, and pram pushers turned out for the annual Pirates Week 10K to experience a trip to Hell and Back. The journey was highlighted by the appearance of the Devil himself at his Hangout, which marked the turnaround spot.

After the physical activity, residents and visitors enjoyed breakfast and the distribution of performance awards and random prizes at the Gecko Beach Cafe.The run was sponsored by Krys & Associates,  and Le Bleu Water, and was organized by the Phoemix Athletic Club and the Pirates Week Committee.

Marius Acker had a game plan for the day, as he is looking forward to several upcoming competitions.His strategy of forging to the front and offering a challenge to all others to match his pace served him in good stead on this occasion as he led from start to finish over the 6.2 mile distance.

His time of 36 minutes, 25 seconds saw him comfortably home ahead of an outstanding result achieved by runnerup Kelly Garrett, a lady visitor from Australia, who posted a time of 39 minutes, 16 seconds.Close on her heels was Graham Monk at 39:19, with recent Ironman Triathlon competitor Jasper Mikkelsen a few  steps back in 39:35.Second place honours for the ladies went to Beth Schreader in a time of 41:20, with third place in this category being capured by Lauretta Bennett with a 45:20 clocking.

Age group winners included Victoria Crawshaw,Katrina Rowe,Gill Comins, Dawn Kirton, and Caroline Courtis on the ladies side, with men's age group winners noted as Steven Porter, Mark Hogan, Tom Gammage, Fernando Contreras, and Roger Davies.

Visitors participating hailed from such points of origin as New York, Virginia, Ontario, British Columbia, and Australia, and included Seattle Seafair Pirate Bill Setter from Washington. Special mention must be made of Mike McDonald, fifth overall finisher, and volunteers Ed Solomon and Larry Walters, who assisted a competitor who suffered a medical difficulty during his run.

Organizers from the Phoenix Athletic Club were extremely pleased with results and expressed thanks to sponsors, volunteers, the Pirates Week Committee, and the staff at the Gecko Beach Cafe.
