GAME 2 - SUNDAY, MAY 31ST 9:00 AM !!! 5/18/09
In Game 1 of the semi-finals the Budget Beavers handed Elite Marble & Granite a severe 18-6 loss, with Captain Mark Missal leading the charge with six goals in the victory. The remaining Beaver's goals were scored by Tim MacDonald (4), Jamie Lyon (4), Chris Moser (3), and Rob Leadbetter (1). Team goaltender Ryan Vanderwal had an outstanding game allowing only six goals to pass by the Elite offence: Mike McDonald (4), Patrick Agemian (1), and Fareed Hosein (1). The night's second game was nothing short of amazing. Both team benches put everything they had on the line. The league leading Alba High Rollers entered the game with only six players, down both their leading goal scorer Wolfgang Brocklebank (out for season) and team captain Darryl Hather, whereas the underdog CDMS squad came out with a full bench, 12 skaters strong. From the onset the CDMS crew dominated taking an early lead, using their bench to facilitate quicker line changes, forcing the thin High Rollers team to work for the entire game. However with three minutes left in regulation and CDMS up 4-2, Alba showed why they were the #1 contenders again this season; scoring two goals in the final minutes to send the game into overtime and scoring the sudden death winner with only a minute into extra time. A total of three goals in three minutes to win the game. The Alba High Rollers goal scorers included Jeff Hart (2), Ryan MacMillian (1), Chris Chreighton (1), and Eric Mildenberger (1), meanwhile CDMS scoring lineup included Brendon Malice (2), Rob Brooks (1), and Pat Bourque (1). Heading into the best-of-three finals for the coveted Cherry Cup, the league will see the ultimate matchup of the WestTel Roller Hockey League's two top teams, #1 Alba High Rollers and #2 Budget Beavers. Although the High Rollers have won the title in back-to-back seasons, the buzz around the league is that the Beavers have the upper hand, due to Brocklebank's absence for the remainder of the playoffs. However, Alba is sure to be riding on the their comeback victory from this past Tuesday, and with two all-star goalies in the pipes and two small but talented benches. Fans are in for a treat as the two teams will faceoff on Tuesday, May 26th, in Game 1 of the Cherry Cup finals. On behalf of the league, good luck to all of our competitors.
