Cayman Golf CourseThe North Sound Club was the host of the 17th Cayman Islands Amateur Championship this past weekend, May 9&10. In almost ideal playing conditions, a field of 74 men, women and juniors contested 36 holes over two days for the Island’s national honours.

After the first day of competition, a couple of competitors distanced themselves from the field with sterling play, but steady shotmaking on day two, saw many others jump onto the leader board and turn all of the divisions into a competitive fight.

On the womens’ side, perennial champion, Siobhan Ribbins claimed her fourth Ladies Championship title, narrowly holding on to her lead from day one over second place finisher Josie Yeend.

In the Ladies Flight division, Rocio Esau’s excellent first day play was enough to hold off a strong challenge on Sunday from second place finisher Nisha Bismillah and a chasing ladies’ pack.

Brian Fitzgerald was victorious in the Men’s Flight, four shots ahead of Dan Andersen who finished second, and six shots clear of Ian Ashman and Tom Crawford.   Crawford did take satisfaction in taking the Men’s Super Senior Championship, with Robert Chilman winning the Men’s Senior Championship title, comfortably ahead of second place finisher George Christie, who edged out Tracy Moore on a count back.

The most exciting golf and result of the weekend came in the boys’ Junior Championship, which was won on the first playoff hole by defending champion Peter Mitchell, after he and Cody Bergstrom had tied on a score of 171 after 36 holes of regular play.

At the evening’s prize-giving award ceremony, Judy Van Liere, president of the Cayman Islands Golf Association (CIGA), thanked Dion Bodden of NCB Homes who was the main sponsor of the tournament, as well as the 18 corporate and individual hole sponsors. She also had warm praise for the North Sound Club for hosting the successful event, and particularly acknowledged the assistance of NSC golf pros Kevin Mumford and Mike Touchette.
