George Town under the expert guidance of Coach and former National representative Lee Ramoon was too hot to be handled by the young Bodden Town team in the 2009-2010 Cayman Islands Football Association (CIFA) Digicel Cup final last Ash Wednesday at the TE McField Sports Centre.
It was indeed a well played final which drew a significant amount of spectators from across the island to witness these two teams battle for supremacy in this seasonal championship.
George Town after getting to the final after the astonishing disqualification of Tiger FC wasted no time placing a goal in the back of the net in the 5th minute courtesy of Justin Pierre. The Bodden Town camp had not fully recovered before captain of the George Town Ian Lindo netted his team’s second goal in the 27th minute ending the first segment 2-0.
At the start of the second half both teams were at it again but it was the George Town who looked the better of the two making some sharp passes in midfield and going forward intelligently. Bodden Town managed to break up the attack at the last moment on several occasions.
Bodden Town in desperation held on firmly in preventing the score line from increasing while trying their best to get on the score sheet. This became a reality in the 60th minute when the prolific Theron Wood scored from over thirty yards out ending the game 2-1.
Digicel has been the sole sponsor of this competition for the past five seasons. George Town has been a keen challenger since its introduction reaching the final several times and has copped the title for the first time. Their last and closest chance at holding this cup was in the 2007-2008 season when they lost to Roma 1-0.
President of CIFA Jeffrey Webb thanked Digicel for their fifth year of unbroken partnership and support to the football association while pointing out that this final was a keenly contested one as both teams exhibited tremendous levels of sportsmanship and proficiency at the Premier League standard.
“On behalf of CIFA I thank Digicel Cayman and its staff for five years of unbroken partnership and support in all areas. In this present financial climate we as a sports body have to appreciate the efforts of the corporate community and stake-holders for assisting us in developing football in the Cayman Islands. The game was zealously contested by both teams and was worth watching. The results showed the depth and intensity of the game with the better team taking the cup. We at CIFA will continue to keep this and all other competitions in line with the highest level of discipline, honesty and hard work which is the core elements for excellent success in football among other sports.
Congratulations to George Town for taking the championship and well done to Bodden Town for making it to the finals. Thanks again Digicel Cayman."
Meanwhile Digicel Cayman’s CEO Victor Corcoran had this to say, “Digicel congratulates George Town Sports Club on winning the Digicel Cup Premier League Championship 2010. We would also like to congratulate Bodden Town for providing great competition and displaying good sportsmanship. We thank all fans who came out to support their favorite team. Digicel, in collaboration with the Cayman Islands Football Association, continues to bring the best in local football to our fans and customers in the Cayman Islands.”
