Cayman Sports Person of the week this week, bought to you courtesy of Burger King and the CaymanNetNews, is Gaelic Football's Sarsfields Captain, Avril O'Reilly.
Avril is originally from Dublin and arrived in Grand Cayman almost 3 years ago. Although she supported her home team play in Croke Park, she herself played Gaelic football for the first time just last season, earning her the honour of ‘Best Newcomer’ in the 2008 Digicel Ladies League.
Outside of this, Avril is no stranger to sport. She is an avid runner and plays soccer with Sunset Football Club. What she likes about Gaelic football is “the fitness and physical skills needed to play and the social aspect as people from all different nationalities play together. I love all sports and am quite into anything that has you running around outside. I played in the mixed league and really enjoyed it. Cara [Hennessy] also convinced me to come down and give it a go, so I did.”
Avril is working on expanding her trophy collection by being this year’s top scorer with 40 points so far in the 2009 ladies league and as captain of Sarsfields, is determined to get her team back on the top spot in the league table by the fast-approaching last round. She has seemingly boundless energy on the Gaelic pitch, running rings around her opponents.
Avril’s preferred position is midfield and with Emma Santiago, another speedy mid-fielder, they are truly a force to be reckoned with and are no doubt aiming to be this year’s championship winners on finals day on 20 June at the South Sound Rugby Club.
