Fresh winds from the south, gusting to 20 knots, provided challenging conditions for the young sailors. Ian Barrows from the USVI sailed very well to take posession of first place. Oliver Fogerty is the top Cayman entrant in 9th position.

The most exciting and prestigious sailing event ever to be held in the Cayman Islands.
In March 2010, the Olympics are coming to Cayman. The Cayman Islands Sailing Club has been chosen to host the North American and Caribbean regional qualifying event for the Youth Olympic Games 2010 Sailing Regatta in the Byte CII dinghy class.
The Youth Olympic Qualifiers will take place alongside the highly successful J/22 International Invitational Event in a major Regatta from 10-15 March 2010 in North Sound.
We expect to host up to 100 of North America and the Caribbean’s top youth sailors plus coaches and families.
Sailing is a core Cayman sport. The first sport in which the Cayman Islands participated at an Olympic Games - when Gerry Kirkconnell sailed at the 1976 Montreal Games. Cayman sailors have since competed in 4 Olympic Games, most recently Sydney 2000. The CI Olympic Committee recognises sailing as a core Cayman sport; one which
allows local participants with motivation, talent and support to represent their country at the highest International level.

 

 

 

altaltRace Cayman is finally underway with all 32 competitors on island and in posession of their boats. Already there has been much activity on North Sound with visiting sailors joining in the Conyers Byte Nationals racing over the weekend. Oliver Fogerty won that event and it gave everyone the opportunity to check out the competition. There is plenty of talent here with several sailors already qualified for the Youth Olympic Games in Singapore this summer. Many more are hoping to join them in Singapore including some of our local sailors. Tomorrow, Wednesday, sees the final practice race and then on Thursday the real action begins.

We have now closed registrations for both the Byte C11 North American Championships/Youth Olympic Games Qualifier and the J22 Invitational International Regatta. 33 Bytes will be on Course 1 starting on Wednesday 10th March and 12 J22s will be on the outer course starting on Saturday 13th March. We have a team of race committee and safety boats prepared, and a lot of the Byte sailors will bring coaches who will be out on the water too. It’s going to be busy out there on North Sound!
