Pilates is a method of movement developed nearly a century ago by the late Joseph Pilates (1880 – 1967). The exercises were developed by Joseph Pilates during WWI to help prisoners of war regain their strength and mobility. Pilates exercises will help you develop optimal strength, flexibility, endurance and posture without adding bulk or stressing your joints. It is the perfect exercise for most people, whether it is used as a complement to a cardiovascular program, sport-specific training, or rehabilitation. The mind-body aspect of Pilates is also useful in prevention of stress related illnesses such as heart disease. It has been said that Pilates might come as close as you can get to the perfect work-out! There are over 500 systematic exercises in the Pilates repertoire which can be performed on a mat or on specialized equipment including the Reformer, Cadillac, Wunda Chair or Ladder Barrel. Props may also be incorporated into a Pilates workout to add extra challenge or for exercise modifications specific to the individual. Every movement is performed from the “core”, or what Joseph Pilates referred to as the “Powerhouse”. The Powerhouse includes the deep abdominal muscles and the muscles closest to the spine. These muscles when strengthened will keep us balanced and create a strong and stable base from which we incorporate all of our movements.
The Pilates method of exercise is a true mind-body connection. The power of our minds controls our bodies far beyond our expectations. In the words of Joseph Pilates himself “it is the mind itself that builds the body”. Quite simply, you can reach all your goals if you are determined in your mind that this is what you want.
