Where did the concept of Got Dance originate?
The idea of Got Dance was inspired by the hit TV Show “So you think you can dance”. I was intrigued by the idea of individuals showcasing and competing on their uniqueness, dance skill, creativity and versatility as performers. I knew we had talent of that caliber here in islands but believe that they are not often given the creativity outlet of freedom to expresses themselves in their own unique way. Got Dance provides a platform that all talents and skill set can receive the exposure and encouragement they deserve.
How does this competition differ from any other dance competition and/or similar productions we have seen here on island?
Got Dance promises to raise the bar on the quality of performances that we have seen, challenging competitors to pull out their best. The competition has far reaching impact as it takes the event to the people, creating smaller outlets for people within the districts through the district auditions.
It is a two tier process in that participants will compete in district auditions and those who qualify will make it through to the final elimination round where they compete for the title of “Cayman Top Dance” and a CI$1,000.00 cash prize.
The final eliminations will be taped and re-aired on CITN as a one hour show where individuals can text in their vote for their favourite performers. The event calls for full participation from the population through the performers and supporters. Got Dance has the future potential to attract both regional and international participants. It has already managed to attract an international Celebrity Judge.
I noticed that the proceeds from the event go to support the BDAL Performance Team and a summer intensive workshop
Yes, funds will be used to assist the BDAL Performance team with their overseas travel to attend dance competitions and/or workshops overseas. In addition funds will be used to provide a two-week summer intensive with two international instructors and free to youth between the ages of 8-16. Once again this program will be unique in that it will allow as many young people as possible to participate either through the classes offered at BDAL or in their districts. Students who participate will benefit from the experience and expertise of both instructors as the instructors will rotate through the studio and the district. The two week intensive will culminate with a mini performance that will be stage in the parks, encouraging people to see that the arts are all around us. BDAL and the Butterfield share the same goal of providing positive exposure in the performing arts to as many children as possible. The diversity and structure of the summer program allows for students who might not others wise be in a position to afford the opportunity have access to the same level of exposure in the performing arts.
