About Ken Chand: The late Kenneth (Ken) Chand was the former Branch Manager of Motor and General Insurance Company for over 20 years in the Cayman Islands. Mr. Chand was very well known and respected for his expertise in the motor vehicle insurance industry. In early February 2008, Mr. Chand died of a heart attack. The Cayman Islands Insurance Association (CIIA) dedicated a 5k walk/run in his memory in April 2008 and since May 2010, the Cayman Heart Fund (CHF) have partnered with CIAA on the Discovery Day 5K Walk/Run in their efforts to raise awareness on heart disease.
Prior Years - 2012: The 2012 Discovery Day 5k Ken Chand Walk / Run was held on a very wet Monday, May 21st at 7am, on and around the Crescent, Camana Bay. This year the Cayman Heart Fund and Kiwanis International raised funds together from this event in support of the Kiwanis Club Fundraiser for Luis Mejia.
2011: Cayman Heart Fund's 2011 Discovery Day 5k Ken Chand Walk / Run took place on Monday May 16th at the Crescent, Camana Bay and was a smashing success thanks to its many supporters and sponsors.
2011 saw the best turnout ever and it was a grand fund raiser for the Children’s Health Task Force – Health4Youth Program. Close to 300 participants (including many children) were there to support the cause and have fun. George Town Primary School was the only school to participate in the event and had 49 students in attendance! A special thanks to George Town Primary School for their amazing spirit and efforts. Everyone definitely had a great time. Cayman Heart Fund is truly proud of its members and supporters for participating and supporting this important cause.
2010: Over 200 participants began their DISCOVERY DAY 2010 celebrations with a memorable run and walk through the environs of Camana Bay.
Although speed was not a major priority for most of the crowd, there was an element of competition present, and James Ogden, followed closely by Derek Larner, led the strung-out group around the double loop course. Chas Gilbert took third position overall. For the ladies, the quickest trio proved to be Beth Schreader, Caroline Cahill and Emily Davies.
His Excellency the Governor, Mr.Duncan Taylor, served notice that not only is he a very competent swimmer, as he demonstrated in Cayman Brac, but that he is no slouch when it comes to distance running, with a high standard result on this occasion.
That was one seriously wet 5k today! Good to see the smiles shining through though. Good job everyone involved in making that a great run.
