A group of children from the Cayman Islands were struck by Lightning during the week of 6-10 July 2009. In this case it was the Tampa Bay Lightning that struck. The Lightning is Tampa’s National Hockey League (NHL) team and they hosted a junior ice hockey camp at their training facility in Tampa.
With Happy Gilmore-like skill and finesse, many local hockey players took to the links on Friday 27th March 2009. The “family fun and fundraising” event was hosted by the Cayman Islands Youth Roller Hockey Club at Britannia. In total, the tournament attracted 30 families (teams) including 60 children, many of whom play in the CI Youth Roller Hockey League at Kings Sports Centre.
It seems they just can’t get enough of the Great White North. The Cayman Breakaway hockey team, sponsored by the Cayman Islands Department of Tourism for the past two (2) years, was back for another shot at winning the cup at the annual World Pond Hockey Championships, a widely popular 4 on 4 tournament played each year on outdoor rinks in Plaster Rock, New Brunswick, attracting teams from around the globe.
The Cayman Islands Ball Hockey Association was proud to host a visiting coach from Canada this past weekend (20-22 March 2009). George Gortsos is the Head Coach of Canada’s national ball hockey team. Gortsos is an accomplished player and coach having won several awards including four (4) world championships as a coach.
